This “Rule” Stopped My Students from Doing What They Love

In our recent Client Attraction SWITCH Program call, a powerful conversation emerged that I know many of us can relate to. One of my students shared how a past mentor had ingrained a limiting belief: "you can't run group coaching programs until you're making $100,000 in your coaching business." This comment really hit me—it even made me quite angry.

The impact of this belief was clear. My student, whose true strength and passion lie in leading group work, felt confined to one-on-one coaching because she hadn't met this arbitrary financial benchmark. She’s not alone in feeling this way. Another student shared that she stopped running a workshop she loved due to advice from a mentor that didn't resonate with her.

These stories remind us of something crucial: we all carry "rules" from mentors, society, or past experiences that may no longer serve us—or worse, are actively holding us back.

The Rules That Shape Us

Whether in business or life, many of us live by rules we didn’t consciously choose. These rules shape how we move forward—or hold us back. In relationships, careers, or personal growth, these rules can become barriers that keep us from stepping into the life and work we truly desire.

So, I ask you: What rules are running in the background of your life? Maybe it’s “I must work harder to deserve success” or “I need to be at a certain level before I can lead others.” Whatever they are, it’s time to examine them.

My Personal Lesson on Limiting Rules

Here’s what I’ve learned: You can break free from these invisible rules and choose the path that feels aligned with your strengths and passions right now—not when some arbitrary milestone has been met.

This doesn’t mean that everything will work out exactly as I thought it would. In fact, I’ve had my fair share of disappointments and challenges along the way. But each of those was a learning experience. I’ve embraced a curious, experimental approach to my work, which keeps things light and flexible—not rigid like the rules I once lived by. It’s in this flexibility that growth, joy, and fulfillment are found.

Personal Practice: Breaking Free Using the SWITCH Coaching Model

I invite you to take some time today to explore what rules may be holding you back. Here’s a personal practice, aligned with the SWITCH Coaching Model, to help you identify, examine, and begin releasing those rules:

  1. S – Set Aside
  • Create a Safe Space: Start by setting aside distractions and judgments. Find a quiet place where you won’t be interrupted, and give yourself permission to be fully present.
  • Reflect on Biases: Ask yourself, "Am I holding onto any judgments about how I ‘should’ be acting in my business or life?" This helps clear your mind and opens you to honest reflection.
  1. W – What?
  • Identify Your Rules: Ask yourself, "What beliefs or rules have I been following without questioning?" These often sound like "I should," "I must," or "I can’t" statements. Write down everything that comes to mind.
  • Uncover More: Continue with the question, "What else?" Keep digging until you’ve uncovered all the internalized rules influencing your decisions.
  1. I – Impact
  • Explore How They Feel: For each rule, ask, "How does this rule make me feel?" Does it feel restrictive or liberating? Do you feel stuck or free when thinking about it?
  • Examine the Effect: Consider how each rule is impacting your personal and professional life. Is it helping you grow, or is it holding you back? Reflect on the emotional, financial, and energetic toll.
  1. T – Transform
  • Shift Perspective: Choose one rule and imagine what your life or business would look like without it. Ask, "What if this rule wasn’t true?" Notice how the energy shifts when you release this belief.
  • Experiment: Approach this process from a curious, experimental mindset. Ask yourself, "What new opportunities or actions would I take if I no longer believed this rule?"
  1. C – Clarify
  • Create New Beliefs: From this new perspective, clarify what you now believe. Replace the old limiting rule with a belief that aligns with who you are now. For example, "I am ready to lead group coaching because it’s my strength."
  • Identify Aligned Actions: What is one action you can take this week to embody this new belief? Write it down and commit to it.
  1. H – Harmonise
  • Integrate Your Learning: Ask yourself, "How can I ensure this shift becomes part of my everyday life?" Reflect on any potential challenges that may arise and how you’ll handle them.

Celebrate and Commit: Acknowledge the work you’ve done in transforming these rules, and commit to moving forward with your new belief system.

Most women have probably experienced the need for validation at some point in their lives.

This need can be driven by a variety of factors, but it often stems from a lack of self-confidence.

Women may feel that they need to receive praise from others to feel good about themselves.

And while external validation can make us feel good in the short term, it's quite troublesome in the long run.

When we rely on others to make us feel good about ourselves, we're giving them too much power over our happiness.

So why is it that women often feel the need for validation?

There are a few possible explanations:

First, many women are taught from a young age that their worth is based on their appearance and their achievements. As a result, they may feel that they need to prove themselves to others.

Additionally, women are often socialised to be caring and nurturing, which can make them more sensitive to the opinions of others.

Lastly, many women have experienced sexism or discrimination in their lives, which can make them feel like they're not good enough.

Ultimately the need for validation is a personal issue that each woman needs to explore and address on her own.

But it's important to remember that we don't need others to make us feel good about ourselves.

We can find our own sense of self-worth by looking within ourselves and cultivation our own inner strength.  And when we learn to love and accept ourselves, we won't need others' approval anymore.

Where does the need for validation come from in women?

Most women are socialised from an early age to seek validation from others.

This comes from a historical need to appeal to others in order to survive.

Yes, up until very recently, and in some countries it is still the case, women did not have any power to own property, have a bank account or lines of credit, were not allowed to drive etc.

This is all in our recent history.

Which means that our well-meaning influencers like our parents, teachers, mentors etc have all passed these messages to us today.

This need for approval can be seen in many different areas of life, but it is especially prevalent among women in traditionally male dominated environments such as STEM, Technology, Finance or Motorsport.

Unfortunately, seeking validation from others can be dangerous in the long run.

There are several reasons why women may feel the need to seek praise from their peers, but some of the most common reasons are a lack of self-confidence and a fear of being judged.

When we rely too much on the opinions of others, we put ourselves in a position where our happiness and self-worth are dependent on outside factors.

This can be a recipe for disaster because it's impossible to control what other people think or say about us.

How women experience feedback

Women experience feedback very differently to men.

Women have an energetic sense of others, they can literally feel others' energy and judgement.

Women experience more personal feedback than men. What I mean by that is that women are more likely to receive feedback on their appearance and personality over their performance.

Women have a far more relationship focused approach. Many women seek harmony and fear conflict.

As previously mentioned, women experience feedback on their appearance suggesting that their worth is linked to how they look.

Growing up being told to be a 'good girl' and not rocking the boat has left women struggling outside of environments where the rules are clear and distinct. Good girl conditioning also leads to putting others before self, and staying quiet, believing that others have more worthy points of view.

And finally historical survival. Women NEEDED the approval of men and those in power in order to survive.  They had to appeal to others.

What are the problems with seeking validation externally?

The need for validation is a strong desire to be accepted and appreciated by others.

It often manifests in women as a need for praise and admiration.

The problem with seeking validation externally is that it can be a never-ending cycle.

People can be fickle, and what once made someone feel good may no longer do so.

Additionally, it can be difficult to maintain healthy relationships when one's self-worth is contingent upon others.

Women often seek validation from others because they need to feel good about themselves. However, external validation is often not sustainable in the long term. It can be difficult to maintain healthy relationships or achieve success when our worth is based on what others think of us.

Ultimately, it is important to find validation from within. This involves learning to appreciate and accept oneself just as they are.

When we learn to find our own validation, we are less likely to depend on others for it, and we can better enjoy healthy relationships.

Is external validation harmful?

Many women feel the need to seek praise from others in order to feel good about themselves.

Striving for external validation can also lead to competition and division among women. We should be lifting each other up, not tearing each other down.

External validation is problematic because it's based on other people's opinions, which can be unpredictable and unreliable.

What's more, relying on others for validation can leave us feeling needy and powerless.

Fostering Internal Validation

There are many ways to find self-validation.

If you have recognised yourself in a pattern of relying on external validation then it is important to give yourself grace and time to learn a new way of being.

When we have relied on others to tell us what to do and how to be, it takes time to come back to ourselves and really get to know what is most important to us as individuals.

You can use the six steps outlined in the Success SWITCH Course for an in-depth process to rediscover your values and priorities, overcome inner blocks to confidence, and understand the science that could be keeping you stuck.

Or use the following tips as a starting point.

  • Focus on your strengths and accomplishments.
  • Spend time with people who build you up and make you feel good about yourself.
  • Practice self-compassion, which means accepting and respecting ourselves, even when we make mistakes.
  • Look for external validation less often. This may mean seeking out compliments less, or being less affected by negative feedback. (For more tips on this see this article.)
  • Focus on the things that you do well. This can be anything from your work to your hobbies. When you focus on your strengths, it becomes easier to feel good about yourself.
  • Learn how to give yourself approval. This can be done by setting realistic standards and accepting yourself for who you are.
  • Remember that no-one is perfect and that it is okay to make mistakes.
  • Focus on the things that you are good at and appreciate your accomplishments, even if they don’t receive rave reviews from others.
  • Remember that we are all different. What works for one person may not work for another. It is important to find what makes you feel good and to stick with it.
  • Remember that you are enough, just the way you are.

How to begin finding Internal Validation

  • Start by recognising your own accomplishments. Give yourself credit where it's due, and don't be afraid to celebrate your successes.
  • Second, surround yourself with a supportive community of women. Find mentors and role models who will encourage you to reach your full potential. (Check out the ways that I can support you here)
  • And finally, don't be afraid to speak up. Share your stories and your experiences, and be a voice for change.

Together, we can create a more positive environment for women in all areas.

If you truly knew your worth would you….

After talking with a number of women last year, and seeing it through my private coaching practice as well as with dozens of students I began to realise just how many points of stress and anxiety my newest coaching and training experience will address for the women who raise their hands to be a part of it.

One of the biggest behaviour catalysts that I have seen is not knowing your worth as a woman.  As women, we are quick to put others first – which can be a strength but when it is at our expense, it can lead to women not stepping forward to really claim their place in the world.

Think about it for a moment, if you truly knew your worth and value what would your life, career or business look like?

If you truly knew your worth would you….

  • Raise your prices for your offers?  
    • And if you did, would you make more money working with more and more people, or would it allow you to work less for the same revenue and have more time to nurture you and what’s most important to you?
  • Ask for that promotion? 
    • When you can see the value that your uniqueness brings to your organisation and the value that has for their bottom line, negotiation becomes a lot easier.
  • Say what you think?
    • How many times do you stay silent in meetings and even social conversations because you devalue your own opinion?  Imagine what it would be like to confidently contribute.
  • Be less likely to compromise on what you really want?
    • Flexibility is a key skill, but women can take this to the extreme.  What would it look like if you held your ground just a little bit longer?
  • Settle?
    • If you truly knew your worth and value, would you have the confidence to hold out for what you truly desire and dream of for your life, career or business?

Of course there is a flip side to this, and I would be remiss if we didn’t also address the potential risks or fears of

  • Being criticised.
    • When you start to stand up for what you believe, others will have differing opinions.  That can feel like criticism, but we can look at this engagement in a far more productive way.
  • Not being liked. 
    • Needing to be liked is a strong driver for women and there used to be good reason for that (which I go into in the new course), but now it is safer than ever to have a differing viewpoint.
  • Being seen as arrogant.
    • This is similar to not being liked.  And the truth is that women do need to act a little differently than men to be able to hold power and not be labelled a ball-buster or similar.

But once you begin to understand where some of this bias comes from, you can begin to operate in a far more powerful way without losing your femininity.

A 2-minute practice to quieten your inner critic

Do you know how to get past your inner critic?

At stressful times our inner critic voice can be so loud that it is difficult to discern whether it is truly you that you are hearing, or if it is your critic.

Tune into the voice that is the loudest in your most stressful moments…

What do you notice about the voice?

  • Is it masculine or feminine?
  • Loud or quiet?
  • Coming from inside your head or outside, and from what direction?
  • What do notice about the pitch of the voice?  Is it high or low?
  • What about the speed that the voice is speaking?  Is it fast or slow?
  • What else can you notice about the voice?

Now, begin to change some of those qualities of the voice.

  • If it is a masculine voice that you hear, change it to a feminine voice.
  • If it is loud, imagine turning the volume down on it and make it much, much quieter.
  • If the voice is coming from inside your head at the back, then imagine it coming from outside your head and off to the left.
  • Play with the pitch of the voice, make it squeaky and high pitched.
  • Speed up the voice so that it is at super high speed, or slow it down so that it is barely able to be understood.

With every change notice what it does to the feeling of stress that your inner critic may induce.

If you are able to manipulate the voice you are hearing, then it is safe to say that you have tapped into your inner critic.
